Spacious

“He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.”

Psalm 18:19

When do you experience being closed in or crowded?  In what circumstances do you feel trapped or attacked?

In those moments how would you be affected if you were brought out of it?

Imagine a spacious place.  What would it look like?  Feel like?  Smell like?

Rest there for a moment.

Does it mean anything to you that you didn’t have to get there on your own effort, but rather that the Lord brought you there?

What is your reaction to being delighted in?

As you let this verse soak in, I’d love to hear your response to it!

  1. Melanie,

I noticed the phrase “a spacious place” in the psalms a couple of weeks ago and I’ve been wondering what it means. I was reading Psalm 31 (verse 8 has the spacious place). What you said makes so much sense. It’s so cool to see God at work – answering my question through your writing.

To answer some of your questions, the way I see the idea of God putting me in a spacious place in my life would be when I feel crowded by my anger, resentment, selfishness, and laziness. When the demons are “in my face” all I need is claim the name of my Lord and savior Jesus Christ and He sets my feet in a spacious place so that I can breath again and smile at my children.

    • Thank you for commenting Alex. Always amazing to me when God keeps bringing the same theme and words up through various venues 🙂
I also agree it is often in the dailyness of life- just the routine things and children, etc that most often bring me to needing a spacious place.

  2. Calm and space feel the same to me. When I am stressed I take a deep breath, go inward and meet God in the woods, or on the water…..which on earth are the two places I prefer to be at anytime, day or night. Here is where I can get perspective of what I need to be doing. It’s also a great place to be where you can laugh, cry, scream, get angry, get hopeful or just to sit and stare straight ahead for awhile. God will embrace all of your emotions without censure which is so spacious and peaceful in itself. I know he speaks to me in those moments although sometimes I misinterpret or don’t hear:((( But he knows that my love is for him and that give’s me peace also:)

    • Thank you Val for commenting. I think of all your beautiful photographs- such great images of God’s creation. And places to go be with him.

What a lovely picture to depict a spacious place! I love the thought of imagining a spacious place, a spacious place in his presence when the world seems to be caving in around me or when the crowd pushes in on me.

I’m so grateful for being rescued at the age of 24. He delighted enough to pursue me, to whisper my name, calling me to salvation. He delighted in me with a loving husband and a miracle son. He delights in me each moment of every day still. I am His.

    Have a wonderful day…

    • For me too, it is when the world seems to be caving in that I most need a spacious place.
Grateful He provides that for us…and he keeps delighting in us.
      Have a wonderful day too!

  4. Fantastic post.

  5. Oh my, I could write a thesis on each question … so much to think about and pray about. Have a wonderful day!
