“Return to me” declares the Lord. “That I may return to you.”
Over and over this phrase is used in the minor prophets.
When I hear the words, I imagine a dance.
“Return to me” he says, his hand outstretched to mine.
Today I accept his invitation and fall into his embrace.
Tomorrow I may turn away and search for something else to take his place.
But he keeps inviting. He keeps pursuing.
He knows this dance through life is made to be with him at my side. With me at his side.
It’s the dance of freedom and joy. It’s the dance of redemption and restoration.
Why do I turn away from that light and some days choose to dance in darkness. When I do, my movement slows until there is no dance, no response, no life.
But through the darkness I hear his whisper again. “Return to me. That I may return to you.”
I say yes. Again. And we dance.
